  De Schul-Atlas verscheen in de periode 1821-1914 als afgeleide van Stielers Hand-Atlas. Er zijn ook versies verschenen voor andere landen en in andere talen: Fins, Frans, Hongaars, Italiaans, Oostenrijks en Zweeds.
• De meeste kaarten in deze schoolatlas zijn verkleinde versies – opnieuw getekend en gegraveerd – van de kaarten in de uitgave 1817-1833 van Stielers Hand-Atlas.
• Van de 1e tot en met de 10e druk van deze schoolatlas zijn bij elkaar zo'n 50.000 exemplaren verkocht.

Inhoud

De atlas begint met een titelblad, met titel en inhoudsopgave. Daar wordt ook Stielers Hand-Atlas als herkomst van de kaarten genoemd. Op de achterkant van het titelblad (2e druk, 1821) staat enige toelichting bij de kaarten van Frankrijk (lijst van departementen), Nederland (lijst van provincies) en Zwitserland (lijst van kantons). Bij de nummers op de kaarten zijn hier de namen en hoofdsteden gegeven. Verder staat er kort iets over de schaal van de kaarten. Tenslotte is er de aankondiging van aanvullende kaarten (supplement).

De eerste uitgaven van de atlas bevatten 20 kaartbladen van ongeveer 27 × 24 cm, met een kaartbeeld van ongeveer 21 × 18 cm. De kaarten zijn in Romeinse cijfers genummerd van I t/m XX. Er zijn 2 wereldkaarten (oostelijk en westelijk halfrond), 5 kaarten van Europa en de andere werelddelen, en 13 kaarten van Europese landen – waaronder 6 van Duitsland.

In de oorspronkelijke opzet waren sommige gebieden wel erg summier in kaart gebracht. Daarom verscheen in de periode 1822-1824 een supplement van 6 kaarten, van Australië, Zwitserland, Europees Rusland, Oost-Indië, West-Indië en de Verenigde Staten van Noord-Amerika; zie ook de lijst van alle kaarten. Na 1830 waren deze extra kaarten standaard in de atlas zelf opgenomen.

Vanaf 1826 was een tweede supplement van 3 kaartbladen verkrijgbaar, met natuurkundige kaarten van Europa en Azië, en een kaart van het Midden-Oosten.

De kaarten zijn meestal verkleinde versies van de kaarten uit de Hand-Atlas. Ze hebben dus ook een kleinere schaal; zie het overzicht van kaarten en schaal. De Hand-Atlas heeft 73 kaartbladen en de Schul-Atlas maar 20 (of 26), dus lang niet alle kaarten uit de Hand-Atlas zijn gebruikt; zie ook de vergelijking met de Hand-Atlas.

De kaarten zijn vervaardigd in koperdruk; de afdrukken zijn met de hand ingekleurd (randkleur). Omdat een koperplaat maar een beperkt aantal afdrukken meegaat (ongeveer 2500), moesten de kaarten frequent opnieuw gegraveerd worden. Er zijn dan vaak herzieningen aangebracht, soms vrij uitgebreid. Er kan ook extra randtekst zijn aangebracht. De randkleur is later voorzien van een bredere 'bies'. Een enkele keer worden ook tekenaar, graveur en jaar van uitgave genoemd. Bij de pagina met plaatjes staan enkele kaarten uit de 2e druk (1821) en de 6e druk (1826) ter vergelijking naast elkaar.

    The Schul-Atlas was published from 1821 through 1914 as a derivative work of Stielers Hand-Atlas. There were also versions for other countries and in different languages: Austrian, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian and Swedish.
  • Most of the maps in this atlas are reduced version – redrawn and reengraved – of maps in the 1817-1833 edition of Stielers Hand-Atlas.
  • The total circulation of the first 10 editions of this school atlas has been around 50,000 copies.

  • In front of the atlas is a title page with title and table of contents, and a reference to Stielers Hand-Atlas. On the verso of the title page (2nd edition, 1821) is some explanation on the number on the maps of France (departments), Netherlands (provinces) and Switzerland (cantons). There are also a few remarks on the scale of the maps, and an announcement of the additional map sheets (supplement).
  • The first editions of the atlas contain 20 map sheets (27 × 24 cm) with a map image of about 21 × 18 cm. The maps are numbered I-XX in Roman numerals. There are 2 hemisphere maps, 5 maps of Europe and the other continents, and 13 maps of European countries – 6 of them of Germany.
  • Some countries were represented rather concisely in the original scheme. Between 1822 and 1824 an addition of 6 map sheets was published with maps of Australia, Switzerland, Russia in Europe, the East Indies, the West Indies and the United States of North America; see the list of all maps. After 1831 these additional maps were integrated into the basic atlas.
  • Three more maps were available from 1826 on: physical maps of Europe and Asia and a map of the Middle East.
  • Most maps are reduced versions of maps in the Hand-Atlas, so their scales are reduced as well: see the list of maps and scale. The Hand-Atlas contains 73 maps sheets and the school atlas only 20 (or 26) so a lot of the maps in the Hand-Atlas have not been utilized; see the table of comparison with the Hand-Atlas.
  • The maps are copper engraved and hand colored in outline. A printing plate lasts only about 2500 prints, so the maps had to be reengraved frequently. Many revisions, not always minor ones, have been made in the process. Marginal text may be added to the maps and the outline coloring obtained edgings. In later versions the cartographer, engraver or year of publication may have been mentioned as well. On the pictures page some of the maps from the 2nd edition (1821) and the 6th (1826) are given side by side for comparison reasons.
